June 4, 2011 The 5th Children's Festival of Russian Culture in NYC

view more photos

In keeping with "practice makes perfect," RACH-C's "Children's Festival of Russian Culture" has been getting better year by year. This year's Festival definitely was a great success! We would like to most sincerely thank all the volunteers, performers, vendors and attendees for making this year's Children's Festival so memorable.

As in previous years, the Festival was held on the Cloisters Lawn at Fort Tryon Park in northern Manhattan to which we once again brought folk ensembles of children from around the US and Canada to perform Russian songs, music and dances.

Like all of our 2011 projects, the festival was dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the first human space flight by the Soviet astronaut, Yuri Gagarin. An exhibition displayed many of the entries from our international children's drawing competition, "My Dream of Space." The winners were announced from the stage.

We are grateful for the support of our primary sponsors: the Russkiy Mir Foundation; the Consulate General of the Russian Federation in New York City; the office of Andre Yushmanov, Consul General of the Russian Federation in New York City; the Russian Nobility Association in America; Council Member Robert Jackson; New York State Senator Adriano Espaillat; the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, and many others.

May 9, 2011 Celebration of Victory Day 2011

These days Russia celebrates the 66th anniversary of the victory over fascist Germany in World War II. In Russia the War is known as the Great Patriotic War. The 9th of May (the day the Nazis surrendered to Russia) is the biggest holiday in the country. More than 30 million Russians died during the World War II. There was no family in the Soviet Union who did not lose someone in that war.
Seven years ago the RIA Novosti started the "St. George Ribbon campaign that became a symbol of people's memory about Russia's heroic past. On the eve of Victory Day, May 9, people attach ribbons with black and orange stripes to their car antennas, jackets, backpacks, or beds in hospitals for veterans. Many people do not remove the ribbon for the entire year.

Orange and black are the traditional colors of Soviet and Russian awards for achievements in combat. The black and orange stripes symbolize smoke and fire.

By displaying the ribbons, the Russian people express their gratitude to those who fought for the independence of their state and saved it from Nazism - the alive and the dead, the known and the unknown."
(RIA Novosti)

On May 9 , 2011 RACH-C congratulated Russian veterans of WWII in Manhattan, NYC with the head of the veteran organization - Vladimir Gutkin and presented them with Georgian ribbons and gifts.

We do remember and we will never forget!

This year the whole world celebrates the 50th anniversary of the first human space flight by Soviet cosmonaut, Yuri Gagarin. In dedication to the anniversary of this defining moment in human history the UN General Assembly declared April 12th, International Day of Human Space Flight.

On April 7th, the UN held it's own celebration in the form of several events organized by the Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to the UN. RACH-C is very proud to have taken part in the organization of these events. We are also happy that a group of our friends and supporters (including honorary RACH-C board member Nikolay Sikorsky, who was also an honored guest of the Russian Mission) participated in the events at the UN. You can read more about these events here.

In addition, drawings received so far for our "My Dream of Space" children's drawing competition were a part of the photo exhibit at the UN and the reception hosted by the Russian Mission to the UN as part of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of Gagarin's space flight.
