Sergei Rachmaninoff (also spelled “Rachmaninov,” 1873–1943) was a Russian composer, pianist, and conductor. Rachmaninoff, it seemed, could do nothing right by most of his contemporary critics’ and composers’ standards. As a person, he appeared somewhat cold and aloof — Stravinsky once called him “a six-and-a-half foot tall scowl.”

This year, the Russian Church commemorates the 100th anniversary of the blessed repose of St. Tikhon, Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia. On April 7, 2025, at 10 a.m., the Divine Liturgy of the Annunciation will be held at St. Nicholas Cathedral in New York City, during which a prayer will be offered to St. Tikhon, who founded this church.

Originally written in 1944, Schwartz conceived his satire as a savage yet humorous attack on Nazi totalitarianism. The play was performed just three times before being withdrawn by Stalin’s regime.
