The New Review is the oldest Russian emigre literary journal in existence, established in New York in 1942 by Russian immigrants escaping from Nazi-occupied Europe.
Among the authors of The New Review are three Nobel laureates – Ivan Bunin (1870-1953), Alexander Solzhenitsyn (1918-2008), and Joseph Brodsky (1940-1996)
Hosted by – Serge Hollerbach, famous American artist and academician of The National Academy of Design, author of memoir New York Notebook (The New Review Publishing, 2013); and Marina Adamovitch, editor-in-chief of The New Review (www.newreviewinc.com / newreview@msn.com).
This event will look back at the power of poetry as expressed by world class Russian poets over the years in the pages of the “New Review”:
Iraida Legkaya, the famous Russian poet in New York, writer for The New Review since 1952.
Vladimir Gandelsman, award-winning author of 10 books & translator of volumes by William Shakespeare, Wallace Stevens, James Merrill, and Dr. Seuss; a laureate of the Liberty Prize (2008); a laureate of the Nation Book Award Major prize (Russia, 2011)
Andrey Gritsman, a nominee for the Pushcart prize (2005); shortlist for the PEN/American Centre Joyce Osterweil Poetry Award (2005); Cief Editor of the Interpoezia magazine;
Bakhyt Kenjeev, award winning author of 12 books; laureate of the Blue Metropolitan Montreal festival;
Grigory Starikovskyi, author of 2 collections of poetry; as well as the American actor Peter Von Berg (work includes appearance in Cast Away, Law and Order, and The Americans).
Participants will also recite works of the deceased poets of the Russian-speaking Diaspora published on the pages of The New Review, among them:
Vladimir Nabokov (1899-1977);
Igor Chinnov (1909-1996);
Ivan Elagin (1918-1987);
Joseph Brodsky (1940-1996);
Lev Losev (1937-2009)
Poems will be recited in Russian and English
The New Review will also present fragments of the documentary film Russian New York: The New Review, dedicated to the post-war history of the Russian-speaking Diaspora in New York (The New Review, Inc. production)
