Premiering at the Vakhtangov Theatre in 1929, it became one of the most celebrated and controversial plays of the period between the wars. The story revolves around a pathetic young drifter named Kavalerov, whose loathing for life under the new Soviet regime is personified by his grossly successful benefactor Andrei Babichev, a sausage manufacturer. When Andrei\u2019s brother Ivan appears in town rallying for a \u201cconspiracy of feelings\u201d to protest the cold rationalism of the new era, Kavalerov\u2019s dream of a return to former times is rekindled. But has history\u2019s hand already been played?
