Just like Christmas, Easter in Russia is celebrated according to the Julian calendar. It usually occurs in April or May, about two weeks after it’s celebrated by the Western Christians. Easter in Russia is perhaps the only religious holiday that somewhat celebrated even during the Soviet times.

Easter 2019. Sunday, April 28

Easter or Pascha is the oldest and most important Christian feast, celebrating the Resurrection of Jesus Christ on the third day after his crucifixion, as described in the New Testament. Easter is preceded by Lent, a forty-day period of fasting and penance.

About us: We are a group of Russian moms who met in Manhattan. We are raising our children with an appreciation of Russian culture through storytelling of the most favorite books from our childhood.  We decided to organize Russian storytime in a local library for children ages 0 to 5 that would be free of charge and provide opportunity for kids from all backgrounds to get acquainted with some of the most popular Russian stories and music in an interactive setting.

On April 18, 2016, please join us for a film screening of the documentary Russian Triumph Abroad: A Pioneer of the Video Era, Engineer Poniatoff, directed by G. Tagneva. The screening is part of the 5th annual celebration of Russian American History Month, organized by the Russian American Cultural Heritage Center (RACH-C). Olga Zatsepina, president and co-founder of RACH-C will introduce the screening. The film is in Russian with no subtitles.

The documentary focuses on the life of Alexander Matveevich Poniatoff, a Russian engineer who arrived in the US in the late 1920s from Shanghai and founded his own firm, AMPEX, in the 1940s. The California-based company, whose acronym combines Poniatoff’s initials and the first two letters of the word “Excellence,” soon received international recognition. In 1947, Poniatoff presented a Model 200A (a prototype of an audio tape recorder) in Hollywood, later winning a $50,000 investment from Bing Crosby. In the following years the company produced several AMPEX studio recorders, allowing companies to broadcast prerecorded audio. For fifty years, AMPEX led the video market, and Poniatoff was awarded many prestigious titles as a scientist and businessman. The film was created by the studio Russian Way, part of the House of the Russian Abroad, founded by artistic director S. Zaitsev.

Since 2012, RACH-C has organized Russian American History Month in the state of New York, working to preserve and share the contributions of Russians and Russian-Americans to the culture and history of the United States. Zatsepina holds a PhD in linguistics from Moscow State University and has been a member of the MGU faculty for over 25 years, as well as a faculty member of several American universities. She is the Vice-chair of the Coordinating Council of Russian Compatriots of the USA and the co-author of the book Russians in the USA: Organizations of Russian Emigration in XX-XXI Centuries.

NYU Jordan Center for the Advanced Study of Russia
